The Eight Key Economic Benefits of Choosing HDPE

Updated: Nov 7, 2023

In the wonderful world of pipes, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) has become a game-changer. From water distribution to industrial processes, HDPE pipes have proven their worth at every step of the way, from design to installation to maintenance.

Sandale takes pride in supplying high-quality HDPE solutions throughout Ontario and beyond. Our customers appreciate the many benefits of HDPE, and fortunately for them, many of these benefits translate into considerable economic benefits as well.

HDPE Requires Fewer Replacements

One of the biggest advantages of HDPE pipes is their durability. They can withstand harsh Ontario freeze/thaw conditions, resist corrosion, and with a lifespan that can exceed 100 years, choosing HDPE means reduced maintenance and replacement costs, translating into substantial long-term savings.

HDPE Has Low Operational Costs

HDPE pipes are not only cost-effective to install but also save you money decades after installation. Their lightweight design makes transportation and handling easier, reducing labour costs during installation. Additionally, their smooth inner surface minimizes friction, resulting in lower pumping and energy costs.

HDPE is Leak-Resistant

HDPE pipes are fused together using heat, forming a seamless, leak-free pipeline. This eliminates the risk of fluid loss, ensuring that every drop is delivered efficiently. Reduced leakage means less waste and lower operational costs for you or your customers.

In December 2020, one of Fort Lauderdale’s main sewer lines broke, spewing more than 200 million gallons of raw sewage into streets, waterways and homes. Something had to be done quickly and the government worked with contractors to move at unprecedented speed to build a completely new line. The choice to install an HDPE pipeline via directional drilling was the right one, ensuring that costly and inconvenient leaks were a thing of the past.

HDPE is Corrosion-proof

Unlike metal pipes, HDPE pipes are highly resistant to corrosion. They will never rust, corrode or degrade, even when exposed to harsh chemicals. This resistance extends their lifespan and reduces the need for maintenance and repair.

The corrosion-resistant option also happened to be significantly cheaper for a unique pipeline project in India:

The cost of the project using HDPE pipe was $129,382 (USD). "If we used mild steel pipe for example," stated Gupta, "the cost would have been more than double, nearly $299,000 (USD). Additionally, the steel pipe would need an external coating and an internal lining to protect the pipe from corrosion. After few years of service life the steel pipe coating and lining would need partial or full replacement, adding to the maintenance cost and time. With the HDPE pipe there is no corrosion problem.

HDPE Pipe Flexibility Also Saves Money

By now you know that HDPE pipes are known for many reasons, and for installers, “flexibility” is #1 on their list of must-haves.

Flexibility allows pipes to adapt to Ontario’s ever-changing ground conditions and absorb ground movement without cracking or breaking. This flexibility reduces the need for costly expansion joints and repair work, making them cost-effective. And it also helps to more easily place pipes in open-cut scenarios.

HDPE Pipes Have Positive Environmental Benefits

HDPE is a material that is much more friendly compared to other options. It is 100% recyclable, which can lead to cost savings in waste disposal and contribute to sustainability goals. Additionally, HDPE pipes are manufactured using less energy and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to other materials like steel.

HDPE Reduces Installation Time

The lightweight nature of HDPE pipes makes them easier to transport and install. Faster installation means reduced labour costs and less disruption to communities during construction.

This quick turnaround time can lead to economic benefits, particularly in large-scale infrastructure projects. Faster completion also results in a faster ROI.

For example, a water pipeline project (122,149 feet) for the San Antonio Water System was heralded as “the largest high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe project of its type ever done in North America” according to the Plastics Pipe Institute. By using HDPE, crews were able to fuse the pipe above ground in long lengths ahead of the installation crew, which resulted in a faster installation and a lower overall cost.

HDPE Pipes Lower Replacement Costs

HDPE’s longevity means fewer pipe replacements, resulting in significant cost savings for the owner. Reduced downtime for maintenance and replacement ensures continuous operation of vital fluid movement infrastructure, preventing costly disruptions to businesses and communities.
